Word documents and Excel spreadsheets now render inline inside Deep Space and KAI can read them the moment they load.

The file opens where you already are Word documents and Excel spreadsheets now render inline inside Deep Space and KAI can read them the moment they load. The Problem A CDE stores documents. That is the entire point. But until now, clicking the preview icon on a .docx or .xlsx file returned a blank wall: "File type not supported." The workaround was always the same. Download the file. Open it locally. Read it. Navigate back to Deep Space and try to remember where you were. For a contract administrator checking a payment claim or a project manager reviewing a tender scope of works before a meeting, that roundtrip is not a minor inconvenience, it is a break in the chain of thought that the CDE was supposed to protect. A document management system that forces you to download the document to read it is a filing cabinet, not a working environment. What Changed Inline Word and Excel viewers, embedded directly The preview button now does what it should have always done. Click the eye icon on a .docx or .xlsx file and the document renders inside Deep Space using Microsoft's online document viewer. No plugin. No download. No new tab. Available across Project Documents and Company Documents. Inline Word Viewer Word documents render with full fidelity Tables keep their borders and alignment. Headers stay styled. Form fields, requirement tables, approval sections - everything a .docx contains is visible inline, exactly as the author formatted it. The Microsoft Word viewer loads directly inside the preview panel. Screenshot 1 - Microsoft Word viewer loading inside Deep Space Screenshot 2 - Word doc with KAI A Sub-Subcontractor Request for Approval Form rendered inline. Requirements table, compliance fields, and Assessment section all visible. KAI has broken the document into its three sections - identifying the key clause, listing every compliance requirement, and explaining the assessment and approval workflow. KAI is active the moment the document loads. Click Ask KAI and it reads the full document in context, pulling out key clauses, summarising requirements, listing financial details, or answering follow-up questions. All from the preview panel. Inline Excel Viewer Spreadsheets show their grid, not an error message Excel files render with rows, columns, and cell content intact. Whether it is a budget category sheet, a tender scope of works, or a schedule of rates, the structure is visible immediately. No download. No desktop Excel required. Screenshot 3 — Mechanical Tender SOW Clarifications with KAI A Mechanical Tender Scope of Works spreadsheet rendered inline - tender documents, scope items, inclusion/exclusion columns all visible. KAI has identified this as a mechanical services trade contract, broken down the scope into chilled water plant, heating hot water plant, air handling systems, ventilation systems, and cool rooms with capacity and specification details extracted from each row. KAI treats spreadsheet data the same way it treats document text. It reads the structure, understands what each column represents, and answers questions about the data. "What systems are included in item 3?" or "Which categories relate to labour costs?" answered without leaving the preview. KAI on Previewed Files Preview it. Then ask about it. KAI is enabled on every previewed document. The moment a .docx or .xlsx file renders inline, KAI can read its contents and respond to questions in the side panel. Open Preview → Document Renders → Click Ask KAI → Summarise · Query · Extract KAI can summarise a subcontractor approval form, list every compliance requirement, break down a tender scope of works by trade, extract line items and totals from an invoice, explain what a spreadsheet contains, or answer follow-up questions about the document — all from the preview panel, with zero downloads. Impact Document management is not storage. It is access. The file is not useful until someone can read it. A CDE that forces downloads for Word and Excel files is asking users to leave the system to use the system. That gap is closed. With KAI enabled on previewed files, the CDE becomes more than a place to store documents. It becomes a place to understand them. © 2026 Deep Space Group · deepspacegroup.ai
